Deleting mistyped usernames/URLs in Firefox auto-complete dropdown
June 1, 2009
Do you use Firefox auto-complete to help you remember your login usernames? Have you ever mistyped one (don’t lie)? Have you ever mistyped the URL to a site you visit frequently, then clicked on it later on the history dropdown (again, don’t lie)?
Hey, I’ll tell you upfront that I’ve done both of those things at least a zillion (well, maybe not a zillion but many, many) times. Then, I always have to remember to scroll through them on the history dropdown until I find the right one and if I’m in a hurry, which happens a lot, I end up clicking the wrong one a couple of times before I realize I’m clicking a typo. When I finally have enough typos on the dropdown, I usually end up deleting them all by clearing my history and my private data which means I have to start all over again and guess what? More new typos! If this happens to you, and you know it does, I have a solution for getting rid of those mistyped entries ONE AT A TIME! All you have to do is start typing the login or URL into the appropriate field and when the dropdown appears, find the ones that you know are wrong. Highlight the incorrect entry, right-click and press Shift+Delete and it’s gone! Don’t you just love simple solutions?
Speaking of simple solutions to everyday computer aggravations, if you have any you’d like to share with Views from the Coop, we’d love to hear from you! Just drop a note to justask [at] viewsfromthecoop [dot] com and tell us about them! My thanks to Lifehacker for this little gem!!

This is one of the best sites out there for computer users like me. I have looked for something to get rid of miss typed addresses for ever. The unused drop down addresses were so irritating. Was surprising how easy they were to remove.
Thanks !!!!!!!!!!

Brilliant and so simple. Thanks very much – agree with the above poster, a great site for those of us who aren’t as computer literate as we would like to be!

I have some URLs in the dropdown menu that have a star beside them (on the right side of the column), and they cannot be deleted. Guess the website owners found a way to make them unable to be easily deleted. How can I get rid of those?

Mizzlie, I think what you’re looking at (I’m assuming you’re using Firefox) are the sites that you have bookmarked. Those are marked by a yellow star to the right of the URL in the dropdown menu. You won’t be able to delete those from your dropdown unless you remove them from your bookmark list.
