Episode 70: An Interview with Bill Carey of Siber Systems, maker of GoodSync [23:29m]: Play Now | Play in Popup | DownloadLEAVE A COMMENT AND TELL US HOW YOU PLAN TO USE GOODSYNC AND WE’LL ENTER YOU IN THE DRAWING FOR A LICENSE! WE HAVE 3 TO GIVE AWAY, COURTESY OF SIBER SYSTEMS!!
The most fun part of doing Views from the Coop is being able to share tips, tricks and tools that benefit our listeners. We know a good tool when we try one (and we’ve tried this one) so it’s a pleasure to introduce you, our listeners to Bill Carey, VP of Marketing and Business Development for Siber Systems, the makers of our tool this week, GoodSync. GoodSync is a piece of software that really combines two tools into one: file synchronization and backup. Don’t take OUR word for it. Read reviews from users at Download.com, Snapfiles.com and Mark Truman of Geek.com. Siber Systems is also the maker of another great program, RoboForm. RoboForm is THE top-rated Password Manager and Web Form Filler that completely automates password entering and form filling on the internet.
We got to ask Bill all about GoodSync:
- What problem is GoodSync trying to solve for users? Why do they need it?
- What’s the difference in synchronization and backup?
- What file formats, or types of files, can GoodSynch synchronize?
- Where can GoodSync synchronize those file to (USB key? external hard drive? FTP server?)
- How easy is GoodSync to use and where can a user go for help?
- What makes GoodSync special or better than other backup or synchronization products?

If this program really does what it says, I’d use it to keep my desktop and laptop in sync. Then I’d be able to work outside more often without worrying that my files will be all discombobulated.
I’d also consider reviewing it in my weekly ezine for small biz owners.

I love my roboform, but would love to have a full copy of good sync to be able to join my desktop with laptops…
all the device sin the house and office are running in separate circles… I need a good way to automatically sync to my external backup drive on schedule that I can customize based on my needs
I hope I win one!
Thanks for the great show Ladies !

Hi
Ami wrong or is synchronization for portable vs fixed systems, i.e., cell phone and computer?
I really need backup, and do it the hard way. Problem is that when one copies a folder to a backup drive, although all edited files are properly backed up, deleted files remain on the backup.

Enjoyed the podcast. Bill Carey gave concise info about the GoodSync program and you gals had good questions. From your discussion, and posted reviews, GoodSync sounds like a real good program. But, don’t put me in the running for a free copy–cause I don’t think we would make good use of it. We do back up files off our laptop and two desktop computers–Jean uses a couple stand-alone hard drives; and we also dump files off on CDs and DVDs periodically. That seems to work for us. Thanks gals :o)

Bob, synchronization is different from backing up. Bill does a great job of explaining the difference in the podcast. By synching the same file that you have in different locations, you make sure that you have the most recent copy in both places. I suggest you listen to the show and/or visit http://www.goodsync.com to get a better explanation. The beauty of GoodSync is that it does both…synchronizes your files AND backs them up.

I have a backup drive, but am still confused on how to transfer my files over effectively…sometimes I see that serveral copies of the same file were backed up and I figure I did something wrong…but don’t know how to correct it. I think the syncronization would help with this issue??? I would also like to back up my kids laptops but not certain how to do that on the same backup drive and keep them separated. Currently I have a 200 GB backup drive…since the new ones are 500+…I probably need more space in order to keep 2 extra (kids) computers backed up?? I think ‘GoodSync’ would be helpful. Put me in the drawing! Thanks!

Synchro my files - that would be heaven! I’ve had some issues with backup and synchro using another program (that will not be named) so have been looking for a solution - this sounds like it’s it! Thanks for introducing me to it!

I would use it to keep things in sync between laptop & desk top to further
my singing & “Senior Companion” careers. I could get a lot more done with
the use of this software.
Thanks for the opportunity to further my dreams.
