Episode 68: An Interview with Daniel Park, Author of ‘Camtasia Studio 5: The Definitive Guide’
July 9, 2008
Kim and I have recently started experimenting with Camtasia 5 by Tech Smith to create video tutorials. You can see an example of our first effort in the previous post from Kim, Choosing Business Technology Tools.
This week’s show was especially fun for me because I was able to use intro/exit music created by Diezelfitter, the band I’m in with my husband, Rick. Appropriately enough, the snippets were taken from “Chicken Train” by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. We performed it together as a band for the very first time at a wedding reception last month. When I say it was for the first time, I mean the first time ANYWHERE….we’ve never even done it during practice. My husband, Rick aka Nick Thomas, our lead singer and guitar player, has been playing it for years but drummer Gary aka Hector and guitar player Chuck aka Eric Richards had never even heard of it! We did a pretty good job. If you want to see the whole performance, check us out on Diezelfitter’s band website.
Moving right along…I met Daniel via e-mail when I discovered that the companion CD in the back of my copy of his book was cracked. I hadn’t even opened it yet! It probably got cracked while I was reading it and I just hadn’t noticed. Daniel was kind enough to help me get a replacement and since I’ve been using his book to help me learn Camtasia, I invited him to be a guest with Kim and me on VFTC. He so kindly accepted and even called us from his home in Huelva, Spain! His wife, Maria, is a native Spaniard and when the two married, they moved to a location near her hometown.
Kim and I were excited to have Daniel with us to discuss all things Camtasia. We started out by having him tell us about his background as a tech writer and trainer with Tech Smith. Daniel was initially hired as a consultant to produce training videos for using their new screen capture software, Camtasia. He enjoyed the project so much and saw the potential of Camtasia as a business tool that he joined the company as an employee. After several years, he left Tech Smith to found his own consulting company, dappertext LLC. He never left Camtasia behind, however, and still spends a majority of his consulting time helping people use the software.
During the first part of our interview, Daniel shared some background on Camtasia with Kim and me by answering some of the following questions:
- What does it do?
- Who is it for?
- How hard is it to learn?
- What equipment does someone need to be able to use it?
Daniel also offered some great tips for getting the most benefit from Camtasia. If you’re new to Camtasia, or even if you’ve never used it but are looking for a software package to help you create video tutorials, marketing content or product demonstrations, this is the show you want to hear! Once you listen to Part 1, you’ll want to hear more about Daniel, dappertext LLC and his book in Part 2 (which I will have posted within the next week). SO….sit back, put the headphones on…and listen to the Chix as they talk with Daniel Park about all things Camtasia!
