Episode 34: Mom and Dottye are the Stars of Views from the Coop

Date August 7, 2007

We had a ball! I’m always amazed at how some of the best resources are the ones right under my nose. My mom, Gwen, and her friend, Dottye have been loyal members of the Virtual Coop Crew ever since Kristi and I started podcasting over a year ago. They’ve also given me lots of input on what to talk about, both online and on the radio. They’re both computer users and even hold offices in the Rolla Area Computer Users Group (RACUG). Dottye is the President and Mom is the Vice President. These two don’t let ANY grass grow under their feet. Besides being comfortable with technology (and I’m not just talking about computers either…both own several tech tools/toys from cellphones to a GPS), they are the official escorts for the Freedom Cruisers Motorcycle Club and have been working diligently on a horse outfit (well, I don’t know what else to call it…ha) for a beautiful stallion named Gideon who will be appearing at the upcoming fair in Sedalia (Dottye’s daughter, Susan, is Gideon’s owner). Geez, I get tired just thinking about all the stuff these two accomplish in a day’s time!

I had them as my special guest co-hosts to talk about how they, as senior citizens, use technology and what they’ve been doing to help other seniors. Last fall, they started a weekly class at the local St. James library for beginners and other computer users who needed some basic information or wanted to learn how to perform a specific task. They started out with four and at one class even had more than a dozen! They’re a great team. Dottye’s the real tekkie chik and Mom brings it all home in plain English.

Along with John Senne (who is 90+ years old), my last guest on the VFTC radio show, these ladies are my tekkie heros. Both tell me the secret to learning to be comfortable with their computers was to NOT BE AFRAID and that’s what they try to get across to everyone they work with. As much as I enjoy technology now, I know that I’ll still be able to enjoy it when I get older, maybe even more! Check out our discussion on Episode 34 of Views from the Coop!
