Welcome to Views from the Coop with your co-hosts, Paige “Chicki Chicki” Eissinger and Kim Beasley, the Blog Queen. On this week’s show, we talked with ID theft expert, John Venezia. John is a Chartered Life Underwriter, a Chartered Financial Consultant, an Affirmative Defense Response System Certified Group Security Specialist and a Certified Identity Theft Risk Management Specialist. Whew…..that’s a lot of initials behind your name, John! He’s also a business consultant who provides assistance to businesses and organizations in addressing compliance issues with FTC and HHS rules and regulation on HIPAA, Gramm-Leach-Bliley and FACTA through a series of educational seminars. You’ll have to ask John what those OTHER initials stand for. John agreed to come on VFTF to talk with us about ID Theft: The #1 White Collar Crime in the Nation.

We asked John several questions about ID Theft:

  • When we say ID Theft, what are we really talking about? What IS identity theft?
  • If I get my identity stolen, what’s it REALLY going to cost me and my employer?
  • Is there a law, or laws, that will protect me if I get my identity stolen?
  • What liability does my employer or any other business have who maintains private info about me have if those records are stolen from them?
  • What steps do I need to take as an individual and as a business to prevent ID theft?

John answered these (and more) in Parts I and II, so make sure you listen to both shows! The information he shared with Kim and me is invaluable and we hope he’ll come back and share with us again in 2008. We also hope that you’ll become a subscriber and join our mailing list so you’ll always be up-to-date on the many topics we cover on Views from the Coop!

ANNOUNCEMENT! As you know, VFTC is a proud member of the Techpodcasts Network and we have an announcement about what Todd Cochran of TPN is up to for the holidays. Todd is kicking off the 1st Annual 24 Hour Podcast Marathon on December 21st beginning at 6am Hawaiian Standard time. Todd, who is the host of the Geek News Central Podcast, is hoping to stay awake and discuss technology, podcasting, family, life, whatever with various callers across the nation and across the world! He’ll be streaming live from his Hawaii based studio on Ustream.TV and will be talking with callers on TalkShoe.com. Why is Todd doing this? He wants to not only bring awareness to podcasting and talk to callers, he will be raising money for the 2 for 1 One Laptop Per Child Program. During November and December this year, audience members of Geek News Central have already contributed nearly $1,200.00 towards the purchase of 3 OLPC laptop pairs. All the money raised during the marathon will be used toward the purchase of additional laptops which he will raffle off at the end of the Marathon. To be eligible for the raffle, you can donate a minimum of $10 via Paypal. For additional information about how you can participate in this monumental podcasting event. To learn more about the One Laptop Per Child Program, go to www.laptop.org. To find out how you can participate in Todd’s 24 Hour Podcast Marathon, drop him an e-mail at geeknews at gmail.com.
