Episode 41:RSS…Is it REALLY Simple Syndication????
September 24, 2007
I’m one Chicki Chicki who has been fooled by the word “simple” when it comes to learning how to use something or learning how to do something. I’ve learned that what’s “simple” to me isn’t always “simple” to you. When is comes to using RSS to subscribe to your favorite blogs, websites or podcasts, it really IS simple. I mean it!
The Blog Queen and I have a real interest in making sure that using RSS is simple. We have a blog and podcast that we want you to read and listen to and we want you to be able to keep up with what’s new on Views from the Coop without having to remember to check the website. That’s where RSS comes in. RSS allows us, as the “newscasters” to syndicate our content across the web without having to actually send notices or announcements of a new blog posting or podcast episode to each and every person or place each and every time we do something new.
Even though The Andy Griffith Show was on a certain channel at a certain time a million years ago (well, maybe not a million…) and isn’t even produced anymore, you can still get your fill of Andy, Barney, Opie and Goober on any number of TV channels where the show is still syndicated. If you enjoy relaxing with the latest issue of People magazine but you aren’t particularly in the mood to run down to the store and see if it’s on the magazine rack yet, why not subscribe and have it delivered to your house when a new issue is released?
Both of those scenarios pretty much describe how RSS works for the content producer and the content reader or listener. In this episode of VFTC, Kim and I explain how you, as a content reader or listener, can become a subscriber to your favorite blog or podcast. We let you know how you can tell if a website uses RSS. We talk about the tools you need to be able to read or listen once you’ve subscribed. We do it the way we do everything….without the geekspeak!
Sit back with your beverage of choice, put your headphones on and get a REALLY SIMPLE lesson in using RSS from Chicki Chicki and The Blog Queen!
